Philosophy
The athletics program at Shelton Academy supports and complements the school’s purpose of working together with families to prepare responsible adults who strive for excellence and commit to serving others. Inspired by our vision to empower future generations with a Catholic education to excel, athletics at Shelton guides and inspires students to develop their fullest potential. Participation in competitions and physical education classes promotes the advancement of physical skills in order to develop and nurture the whole person in mind, body and spirit.
Mission
To develop a quality physical education and athletics program that emphasizes enjoyable participation in physical activities; to advance our school mission to empower future generations with a Catholic education to excel; and to contribute to society with a spirit of innovation, by helping students develop the knowledge, attitude and skills needed to maintain a healthy and physically active lifestyle both now and for the rest of their life.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Physical education classes form an integral part of the student curriculum from early years through high school. Student learning in physical education classes is tailored to age-appropriate levels of development. The goals of physical education classes are aligned with the national “Grade-Level Outcomes for K-12 Physical Education” regarding what students in different levels of development should know and be able to do.
The physical education program emphasizes the development of motor skills, balance, body awareness and hand-eye coordination. Team activities include a variety of age-appropriate exercises and sports that help the students appreciate the fun and joy of competition, conditioning, health and sportsmanship.
Students from Pre-K through fifth grade participate in mandatory swim instruction and water safety training as part of their regularly schedule physical education classes.
As goals for the Physical Education classes at Shelton all students will:
- Develop muscular strength and physical fitness.
- Develop efficient body control and movement.
- Acquire appropriate knowledge, understanding and skills necessary for healthy daily living.
- Demonstrate safety awareness and demonstrate good safety habits.
- Develop a sense of individual and group responsibility.
- Develop a healthy attitude toward physical activity.
- Develop an appreciation for physical activities that can be pursued during leisure time and can contribute to lifetime fitness.
In keeping with our school-wide mission and purpose, special emphasis will also be placed on:
- The need to grow in virtue and character as the basis for true sportsmanship.
- The importance of toughness, selflessness, loyalty, a positive attitude and commitment
- The integration of physical skills with intellectual preparedness.
- Moving beyond one’s individual preferences and learning to share our God-given talents for the service and betterment of others.
- Becoming lifelong leaders who exhibit a physically active lifestyle that integrates physical wellness with personal and spiritual wellness.
The Physical Education Curriculum at Shelton Academy is aligned with the following National Standards for Physical Education (NASPE):
Standard 1:
Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.
Standard 2:
Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities.
Standard 3:
Participates regularly in physical activity.
Standard 4:
Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.
Standard 5:
Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical activity settings.
Standard 6:
Values physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and/or social interaction.
Students in physical education classes will be required to obtain the signed parental consent section of the “Physical Education Expectations and Guidelines” document.
